Meditation on Scripture: Luke 4: 18-19; Is 61: 1-2 "Bringing the Good News"

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor and heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (4: 18-19; Is 61: 1-2)

Meditation:
And to this day those who serve Christ are sent by Him with the same news for all mankind. Having received this news from Him, they must also “proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor”.

In His mercy, the Lord does not threaten sinners who have separated themselves from Him, but sends them words of love and forgiveness, opening the way to heaven for them. The gates of heaven open wide for everyone who earnestly repents. A beggar can enter – wealth is not required there. The uneducated can enter, along with the most learned, if only one has learned to love his Savior and have hope in Him. But this is not all. The news is also directed to the “brokenhearted”; there are many of them on this unfortunate earth. And it’s impossible to enumerate all the things which break people’s hearts during their lifetimes.

Do you, who are reading these lines, know what a broken heart is? Is your sorrow one that no human word can comfort? Is your wound one which cannot be healed? Alive is the One Who said: “Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11: 28). “I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God...Do not fear; I will help you” (Is 41: 10, 13). Alive is the Savior, Who “took on Himself our infirmities and bore our sicknesses” (Is 53: 4)! He can console and give sight to you, who are blind, and to set free you, who are oppressed.

But there is also a different kind of grief – grief due to sin, when our conscience awakens. King David experienced this, as did St. Paul, and all those who sincerely repent know this oppressive grief. God alone can let us feel the horror of our sin and then, letting us understand that we cannot find within ourselves the deliverance from this evil, He shows us the only source of this healing. We understand that for all of us there is forgiveness and reconciliation through the blood of Jesus Christ. He came and suffered for us. Peace is proclaimed for us – “those who were far away and those who were near” (Eph 2:17), we have a loving heavenly Father. “This is the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1: 29). He takes your sin as well, the sin of everyone who comes to Him with complete faith; He is the God of love, ready to be your consolation, your support and your refuge for ever.

And further: “to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, to set the oppressed free”. The Son of God came to free all of us, enslaved by sin and entangled, perhaps unconsciously, by the chains of the evil spirit, and tear us from the power of Satan. “If the Son sets you free, you will truly be free” (John 8: 36). And if we are not always aware of this boundless freedom, which elevates us above all earthly trifles and petty troubles, does not the reproach of St. James remain for us: “you do not have because you do not ask” (Jam 4: 2). Ask, ask fervently and relentlessly that the Lord pour on you the rich gifts of the Holy Spirit. “I will give them a blessing, and I will cause rains to come down in due course; these shall be rains of blessing” (Ez 34: 26).

O, let these words come true in our day. “Lord, teach us how to pray!” (Luke 11: 1). And let us not limit our prayer to narrow human concepts. Let us not ask to be sent only drops of the rain of blessing. Let us ask that streams of grace be poured out on us. When this grace penetrates deeply into our soul we will feel that we are truly free and completely belong to Christ.

«Дух Господень на Мне; ибо Он помазал Меня благовествовать нищим и послал Меня исцелять сокрушенных сердцем, проповедывать пленным освобождение, слепым – прозрение, отпустить измученных на свободу, проповедывать лето Господне благоприятное» (Лк. 4:18–19; Ис. 61:1–2)

И до сего дня служители Христа посылаются Им с тою же вестью всему человечеству. Приняв от Него эту проповедь, они должны также «Проповедывать лето Господне благоприятное».

Господь в Своем милосердии не громит угрозами отступивших от Него грешников, а посылает им слова любви и прощения, открывая перед ними путь к небу. Двери рая широко раскрываются для всякого кающегося нелицемерно. Может войти и нищий, богатство там не требуется. Может войти и неученый, наравне с самым просвещенным, если только он научился любить своего Спасителя и уповать на Него. Но это еще не все, проповедь обращается и к «сокрушенным сердцем»; много их на этой несчастной земле. И не перечислить все множество причин, сокрушающих сердца людей в течение их жизни.

Знаешь ли ты, читающий эти строки, что значит сокрушенное сердце? Твоя скорбь из таких ли, которую не может утешить ни одно человеческое слово? Твоя рана из тех ли, которым нет исцеления? Жив Тот, Кто сказал: «Приидите ко Мне все труждающиеся и обремененные, и Я успокою вас» (Мф. 11:28). «Я с тобою, не смущайся, ибо Я Бог твой: говорю тебе, не бойся, Я помогаю тебе!» (Ис. 41:10, 13). Жив Спаситель, «взявший на Себя наши немощи и понесший наши болезни» (Ис. 53:4)! Он может тебя утешить, дать тебе «слепому, прозреть» – отпустить тебя «измученного на свободу».

Но есть еще другого рода скорби – скорбь о грехе, когда совесть пробуждается в нас. Царь Давид испытал это, апостол Павел также, и все искренно кающиеся знают эту гнетущую скорбь. Господь один может дать нам почувствовать весь ужас нашего греха, и тогда-то, дав нам понять, что в себе мы не найдем избавления от этого зла, Он указывает нам на единственный источник исцеления. Мы понимаем, что для каждого из нас есть прощение и примирение через кровь Иисуса Христа. Для нас пришел и пострадал Он. Нам возвещен мир – «дальним и близким» (Еф. 2:17), у нас есть любящий Отец Небесный. «Се Агнец Божий, Который берет на Себя грех мира» (Ин. 1:29), Он берет и твой грех, грех каждого, грядущего к Нему с полною верою; Он – Бог любви, готовый быть твоим утешением, твоей опорой, твоим прибежищем навек.

Далее: «проповедывать пленным – освобождение, отпустить измученных на свободу». Всех нас, порабощенных греху, опутанных, быть может, и бессознательно, цепями злого духа, пришел освободить Сын Божий и вырвать из власти сатаны. «Если Сын освободит вас, то истинно свободны будете» (Ин. 8:36). И если мы не всегда сознаем эту безграничную свободу, возвышающую нас над всеми земными мелочами и дрязгами, то не останется ли и к нам упрек апостола Иакова: «не имеете, потому что не просите» (Иак. 4:2). Просите, просите горячо, неотступно, чтобы Господь излил на вас богатые дары Святаго Духа. «Дарую им благословение, и дождь буду ниспосылать в свое время; это будут дожди благословения» (Иез. 34:26).

О, да исполнится слово это в наши дни. «Господи, научи нас молиться!» (Лк. 11:1). И не будем ограничивать молитву нашу узкими человеческими понятиями. Не будем просить о ниспослании нам одних только каплей дождя благословения, а попросим,чтобы потоки благодати изливались на нас.  Когда благодать эта проникнет глубоко в нашу душу, тогда мы почувствуем, что действительно мы свободны и всецело принадлежим Христу.
