The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 36, 2 Timothy 1-2.

Topics include: 
(1) Following our fathers/ancestors in their faith in Christ; 
(2) On the laying on of hands in Ordination and Chrismation and receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit; 
(3) Persecution, sharing in the sufferings of Christ, and not being ashamed; 
(4) We did not earn or deserve and are not worthy of this salvation ... that we are in synergy with Christ for our salvation is God's eternal will; 
(5) Timothy was one of Paul's closest collaborators and was with him in much of his ministry ... he was a spiritual son. Timothy put himself at great risk for the sake of Paul and the Gospel; 
(6) 2 Timothy is a farewell as Paul looks toward his martyrdom. He leaves much final and substantial instruction for Timothy; 
(7) Paul's gospel: Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, Heir of the promises of David, as High Priest and King of Israel; 
(8) Our salvation is a participation in eternal glory; 
(9) Quarrelling, gossip, irreverent babble, vain arguments, theological speculation, catechumen theologians on the internet, puffed up and trading unkind words ... all this is harmful, not rooted in the integrity of faith, and counter to the Gospel ... it hinders people from approaching the Gospel in a sober and reverent way. Rather, the calling is to preach repentance, to cleanse ourselves first of what is dishonorable to God, to be set apart for God's glory, and to be kind, gentle, patiently and humbly enduring evil, and correcting opponents in gentleness; 
(10) God remains faithful even when we are faithless ... we have died with Him, been raised with Him, incorporated into His body .. He cannot deny Himself; 
(11) The Resurrection is the key to true faith, let us dispense with the spurious ... cheap faith is blown away by every wind of temptation ... an ungodly person is not of the elect. Our task is to recognise our own hypocrisy and persecute it within us.
