The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 42, II Hebrews 2
August 29, 2023
Topics include:
(1) The Christology developed in Hebrews;
(2) Expiation over against Propitiation, the latter being a mistranslation in the text. In Christ's voluntary self-sacrifice on the Cross, our sins were expiated, that is, wiped away. Our sins were brought into the Holy of Holies and their contact with holiness wiped them away ... not a legal transaction that "makes God happy", as the word Propitiation implies.
(3) A very helpful discussion on suffering: Christ's suffering reveals His perfection. He did not turn inward or become angry or bitter or self-pitying or prideful (as we so often do) but asked for forgiveness for those crucifying him [Ed. and thought of the future care of the Theokos]. Likewise, the Martyrs were happy to suffer for Jesus [and did not curse their torturers]. The Orthodox concept of suffering is that it is salvific, a cross leading us to salvation, if we can accept and use it;
(4) A question on dealing with guilt.
