The Book of Revelation, Part 8: Additional discussion of chapter 5
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
July 23, 2024
Topics include:
(1) The "Scroll" may be the Book of Revelation itself;
(2) A discussion of Enoch chapters 39 and 46--49. While not in the Canon, the Book of Enoch is quoted many times in the Old Testament and alluded to in the New Testament. It underlies the Book of Revelation, and is fulfilled by it;
(3) More discussion of the Hebrew word "Lamb", which can also be translated as "servant". This is relevant if the original text of Revelation was Hebrew or Aramaic;
(4) Discussion of Isaiah 53, the "Suffering Servant" passage, which describes the Day of Atonement sacrifice of the Messiah. It is forbidden to be read publicly in Synagogues. Comparison of the Masoretic rendering of Isaiah 52-53 with the "Targum of Isaiah" rendering;
(5) Echoes of Enoch and Isaiah are seen in Revelation: The Messiah who would offer himself and take on the sins of the whole world, who would not be caught in death but ascend to the right hand of the Father, enthroned with Him on the Cherubic Throne. Who would bear our sins and heal our wounds, as the ultimate Day of Atonement sacrifice, and be worshipped by all the Angels and Saints. We enter into this heavenly reality each celebration of the Eucharist.
