The Gospel of John, Part 13
Verses 8:37- 9:41
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
September 23, 2025
Metropolitan Jonah discusses two incidents recorded in the Gospel of John, which give rise to some of the most important Christological and Trinitarian passages in the Gospel of John:
(1) The first is a discussion with the Jews who claimed a relationship with God as Father based on being descendants of Abraham. Jesus makes it clear that instead their father is Satan, because if their Father were God, they would believe in Him as from God, and, in fact, as God, and would love and follow Him. Instead, they lie about Him and seek to murder Him, which flows out of the very character of Satan. Key passages: "if anyone keeps My word, he shall never see death." "Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."
(2) The second incident is the healing of the man born blind by Jesus on the Sabbath. Again, the religious leaders are consumed by hypocrisy and unbelief, and so are spiritually blind to God and His Son. But the man born blind gains both his physical and spiritual sight. Key passages: "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind."
