The Divine Liturgy, Part 3
Typology of the Priesthood and the Temple
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
April 14, 2026
Topics discussed include:
(1) The Priesthood and Temple are essential context for understanding the Divine Liturgy. Christ is the High Priest of the New Priesthood, after the order of Melchizedek. This Priesthood of the New Covenant is manifested and made present by Jesus in His suffering, death and resurrection.
(2) Discussion of type, antitype (Gk. anti=instead of), and archetype. Melchizedek and David are types of Christ, He being the fulfillment; but throughout the ages, He is the eschatological archetype, the Ancient of Days.
(3) Discussion of key verses in Hebrews: 5:7-9, 8:1-6, 9:11,15 & 23. Christ offered His own blood for our eternal redemption. It is a sacrifice (Lt. to make holy, Gk. not of this world) offered as a means of sanctification for us. It purifies our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Gives remission of sins and guilt.
(4) Our offering is recapitulated in Christ, whose offering is acceptable to God. We enter in the Divine Liturgy into a cosmic thanksgiving and into Christ's worship of the Father. The primary thing we have to offer to God is our Thanksgiving (the "Eucharist"), which is accepted by God through Christ ... who has brought us up to heaven and endowed us with His kingdom which is to come.
(5) St Ignatius of Antioch: Discussion of the typology of Bishops (God), Priests (Apostolic council), and Deacons (servants, ministers of Jesus Christ).
