Meditation on Scripture: Matthew 11:28 "Coming To Christ"

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)

Meditation:
These words have already encouraged and comforted many people; they are directed to all of us, without exception, since, of course, there is not a single person who would not need them sooner or later. But there are instances, there are times, when they acquire a special significance for us. Earthly happiness, enthusiastic dreams and ardent hopes of youth are too soon replaced by disillusionment and despondency, when it seems that we share with the whole world a great all-encompassing sorrow.

Are we not in such a state today? And then, doesn’t it sometimes seem to us that after many fears and worries, we have entered a moral halcyon period, full of indifference to everything? 

For an unbeliever, such a spiritual state is understandable, but we, who are more fortunate in knowing the truth and the light, -- we, for whom the heavens are open, must not and can not be despondent and constantly repeat that life has become wearisome for us. Have we not heard the words: “Come to Me all you who labor…”?

But you will say that a weary and burdened person will lack the determination, will lack the strength to move in order to go to Jesus. But if Jesus demands this effort from me, if He calls me and wants me to respond, then by His word He instills this strength in me. When He says: “Come to Me”, it is like He is pulling us toward Him, and His words, expressing so much love, so much mercy, strengthen us on our difficult path. When He says: “you who labor and are burdened”, we feel in His words such a deep sympathy towards our infirmities, and such a desire to help us, that, awakening from spiritual sleep, we arise, go to Him, and find in Him eternal rest for our souls.

«Приидите ко Мне все труждающиеся и обремененные, и Я успокою вас» (Мф. 11:28)

Слова эти уже многих ободряли и утешали; они обращены ко всем нам, без исключения, так как, конечно, не найдется ни одного человека, который бы не нуждался в них рано или поздно. Но, бывают случаи, бывают времена, когда они получают для нас особое значение. Земное счастье, восторженные мечты и пламенные надежды юных лет сменяются слишком скоро разочарованием и унынием, когда мы как будто разделяем с целым миром великую всеобъемлющую скорбь.

Не находимся ли мы и теперь в таком состоянии? А затем, не кажется ли нам подчас, что после многих тревог и волнений для нас настало нравственное затишье, полное равнодушие ко всему?

Для неверующего понятно такое состояние души, но нам, более счастливым в познании истины и света, – нам, которым открыты небеса, не должно и невозможно отдаваться отчаянию и повторять постоянно, что жизнь нам постыла. Неужели мы не слышали слов: «Приидите ко Мне все труждающиеся...»

Но, скажете вы, усталому и обремененному не хватает решимости, не хватает силы двинуться с места, чтобы идти к Иисусу. Однако, если Иисус требует от меня этого усилия, если Он зовет меня и хочет, чтобы я откликнулся, то Он уже Своим словом внушает мне эту силу. Когда Он говорит: «Приидите ко Мне», – Он уже как бы притягивает нас к Себе, и Его слова, выражающие столько любви, столько милосердия, подкрепляют нас на трудном пути. Когда Он говорит: «труждающиеся и обремененные», – мы чувствуем в Его словах такое глубокое сострадание к нашим немощам и такое желание нам помочь, что, просыпаясь от духовного сна, мы встаем, идем к Нему и в Нем находим вечный покой душам нашим.
