Meditation on Scripture: John 1: 5 "The Light In The Darkness"

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’ ” (John 1: 5)

Meditation:
A dark, impenetrable night envelops the earth, menacing clouds conceal the light of the stars, and a weary, lonely traveler making his way through the thick forest doesn’t see a single step in front of him; he is close to despair, and it seems to him that he will never reach his goal, he will never make it to an inhabited place. Suddenly, amid the thick darkness, something glistens – somewhere far away there is a light, and a ray of hope suddenly enters the soul of the traveler. He moves forward more courageously, and little by little, one light after another comes on in front of him; he is no longer alone – he is saved. The goal appears attainable. The village to which he is hurrying comes into sight.

Doesn’t this happen in our lives as well? In the history of mankind and in the personal life of each of us there are times when everything is enveloped in a thick darkness; sin, malice, unbelief, enmity, lies – it’s as if all this power of the enemy acquires dominion over all mankind and, concealing all light from us, does not permit us to penetrate that impenetrable darkness. But “the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” – it cannot overcome it. It is enough for a single light to come on for the light to continue to spread; one spark can light many lights, and it will be bright around us once again.

When we pass through joyless times whose weight oppresses us, the Lord does not want us to submit to gloomy thoughts. He wants us, amid this gloom, to constantly strive for the light without being discouraged, and to have our example shine with the light of truth and goodness. In life we need most of all to have the light of love, spread by those who are close to the source of Divine Love. A soul which approaches the Throne of the Almighty in fervent daily prayer will undoubtedly be illuminated with a heavenly light and will fulfill the instruction of St. Paul: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to know what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12: 2).

Having been renewed, it will be able to spread around itself the quiet radiance of love, and kindle a Divine spark in others. Then light will finally defeat darkness, and the eternal sun of Truth will again rise above us.

«Свет во тьме светит, и тьма не объяла его» (Ин. 1:5)

Темная, непроглядная ночь окутала землю, грозные тучи застилают звездный блеск, и усталый, одинокий путник, пробирающийся через дремучий лес, не видит ни одного шага  перед собою; он близок к отчаянию, и ему кажется, что он никогда не дойдет до своей цели, никогда не проберется до обитаемого жилья. Вдруг среди густого мрака блеснуло что-то – где-то далеко загорелся огонек, и в душу странника сразу проник луч надежды, он смелее пускается в путь, и мало-помалу загорается перед ним один огонек за другим; он уже не один – он спасен. Цель кажется ему достижимой, перед ним открывается городок, к которому он спешит.

Не так ли бывает и в жизни? В истории человечества и в личной жизни каждого из нас бывают времена, когда все окутано густым мраком; грех, злоба, неверие, вражда, неправда – вся эта вражья сила приобретает как бы власть над всем человечеством и, застилая от нас всякий свет, не дает нам проникнуть в эту непроглядную тьму. Но «свет во тьме светит, и тьма не объяла его» – она его объять не должна. Достаточно загореться одному огоньку, чтобы свет распространился далее; от одной искры может загореться множество огней, и вокруг нас снова станет светло.

Когда мы проходим через безотрадные времена, гнетущие нас своею тяжестью, Господу не угодно, чтобы мы поддавались мрачным мыслям. Он хочет, чтобы мы среди этого мрака, не унывая, стремились постоянно к свету и своим примером сияли ярким огнем правды и добра. Мы в жизни всего более нуждаемся в тихом сиянии любви, распространяемой теми, которые близки к ее источнику, к любви Божественной. Душа, приступающая ежедневно в горячей молитве к Престолу Всевышнего, озарится несомненно лучом небесного света и исполнит указание ап. Павла: «Преобразуйтесь обновлением ума вашего, чтобы вам познавать, что есть воля Божия, благая, угодная и совершенная» (Рим. 12:2).

Обновившись, она станет способна распространять вокруг себя тихое сияние любви и зажигать в других искру Божию. Тогда свет, наконец, победит тьму, и вечное солнце Правды взойдет снова над нами.
