Meditation on Scripture: Mark 8:2 "Compassion For Others"

“I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat” (Mark 8:2)

Meditation:
What concern about the infirm and hungry people! Let us examine the details: they are exhausted, some of them live far away, they may become weak en route – the Lord notices and lists all these things. This is not a superficial general benevolence which does not go into detail and barely touches another’s need. He not only has compassion for those who have already become weak, and He not only sees that which is clearly visible. No, He forestalls their becoming weak. He does not want it to come to that, He takes into consideration the long journey, and for this reason He remains with them late into the evening. And He feeds them with the hands of those very people who have become so weary of this hungry crowd that they asked that the people be let go, arguing that there was nothing to feed them with.

At that time the disciples were sometimes still negligent; fatigue would overcome them, and their zeal diminished; but despite all this, they were obedient, and when the Lord put bread into their hands and told them to distribute it, they did  so. Having once again received from His Spirit, their deadened feeling revived, and they became transmitters of His bounty.

May the Lord teach us to have sincere and deep compassion, and to perceive all sides of the suffering of others and remember that if we have nothing from ourselves to nourish not only the spirit, but even the body, then it is not we, but He that needs to nourish. Let us give our meager supply into His hands, and He will make it sufficient. 

Let us thank Him for these words: “You give them something to eat” (Mark 6:37). He Who is the Giver of everything, wants to use us as his tools and to endow, nourish and console through us.

День за днем. 14 (27) февраля
«Жаль Мне народа, что уже три дня находятся при Мне, и нечего им есть» (Мк. 8:2)

Какая забота о немощном, голодном народе! Заметим все подробности: они отощали, некоторые из них живут далеко, они могут ослабеть в пути – все это замечает и перечисляет Господь. Это не поверхностное какое-то общее благотворение, которое не входит в подробности и едва касается чужой нужды. Он не только сожалеет о тех, которые уже ослабели, Он не только видит то, что прямо бросается в глаза. Нет, Он предупреждает ослабевание, не хочет допустить до этого, Он принимает во внимание дальний путь, и ради этого остается с ними до позднего вечера. И кормит Он их руками тех самых людей, которым незадолго до того наскучила эта голодная толпа так, что они просили отпустить ее, доказывая, что накормить нечем.

Ученики тогда еще были иной раз нерадивы; усталость брала верх, усердие ослабевало; но, несмотря на все это, они были послушны, и когда Господь им вложил в руки хлеб и повелел раздавать – они раздавали. Восприняв вновь от Духа Его, оживилось притупленное чувство, и они стали передавателями Его щедрот.

Да научит нас Господь жалеть искренно и глубоко, вникать во все стороны страдания наших ближних и помнить, что если мы не имеем чем накормить от себя не только душу, но даже и тело, то кормить должны не мы, а Он. Предадим наш скудный запас в Его руки, и Он сделает его достаточным.

Возблагодарим Его за эти слова: «Вы дайте им есть» (Мк. 6:37). Он, Податель всего, хочет употребить нас, как Свои орудия, и наделять, насыщать, утешать через нас.
