Meditation on Scripture: Is. 60: 20 "The Lord Is Our Light"

"For the Lord will be your everlasting light” (Is. 60: 20)

Meditation:
On an old painting of the Nativity, the Infant Jesus is represented as lying in a manger, the Blessed Virgin Mary is bent over him, they are surrounded by shepherds in silent reverence, and cattle are visible in the background.

Dark night surrounds them, and the cave is only dimly lit by a lantern. But there is a radiance which comes from the Infant Himself, which throws a bright light on the entire painting. And so it happens in a soul overcome with grief when Christ is truly present in it. The light coming from the One who Himself is the light of the world, in Whom “there is no darkness” (1 Jn. 1: 5), illuminates the deepest darkness of sorrow. Moreover, the sorrow itself turns into God's mercy, since only through it the source of spiritual joy is opened to us, which has been hidden in ordinary life.

If there were no dark night, we would not know about the existence of stars. If there were no sorrow on earth, we would be deprived of that consolation and that ineffable grace, which the Lord pours out abundantly on those who mourn.

With this wonderful light, all concerns and all the needs of life, even the most burning grief, become secondary, and our enlightened eyes look reverently at the Savior himself -- the Source of all comfort.

«Господь будет для тебя вечным светом» (Ис. 60:20)

На старинной картине Рождества Христова Младенец Иисус представлен лежащим в яслях, Пресвятая Дева Мария нагнулась над Ним. Их окружают пастухи в немом благоговении, а на заднем плане виден скот.

Кругом темная ночь, пещера лишь слабо освещена фонарем. Но от Самого Младенца исходит сияние, которое бросает яркий свет на всю эту картину. Так бывает и в душе, омраченной горем, когда Христос воистину в ней пребывает. Свет, исходящий из Того, Кто Сам есть свет мира, в котором «нет никакой тьмы» (1Ин. 1:5), озаряет глубочайший мрак скорби. Больше того,  сама скорбь обращается в милость Божию, так как только через нее нам открывается источник духовной радости, сокрытый в обыкновенной жизни.

Не было бы темноты ночной – и мы бы не знали о существовании звезд. Не было бы скорби на земле, и мы были бы лишены того утешения, той неизреченной благодати, которую Господь изливает обильно на скорбящих.

При этом чудном Cвете все заботы, все нужды житейские, даже самое жгучее горе, отходят на задний план, – и просветленные наши очи благоговейно взирают на Самого Спасителя – Источника всякого утешения.
