The NOUS is the locus of the image of God within us. Everyone has a NOUS, and this part of us allows us to be aware of God and the spiritual world, and ultimately to live in Communion with God. As Metropolitan Jonah explains, our noetic (spiritual) awareness is clouded over by passions, thoughts from our ego, bitterness and resentment, etc., which continually bombard us, and render us spiritually unaware. By "heart-wise" reading the Scriptures, by practising the Jesus prayer, by continuing cycles of repentance and confession (as we discover passions, brokenness and sins during that prayer), and ultimately by attaining stillness before God by these means, we can attain to noetic awareness. Each of us, if we pursue God in this way, can enter into ever deepening communion with Him, as have the Saints.
