The Gospel of John, Part 14
Chapter 10
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
September 30, 2025
Description:
Metropolitan Jonah discusses the Gospel of John chapter 10. Topics include:
(1) Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who leads His flock to safety, a model for Hierarchs who lead their flocks safely through times of heresy, vs. the Jewish religious leaders, The latter were not listened to by God's flock, who listened instead to the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ and flocked to Him. The false shepherds were jealous and angry that they were not listened to.
(2) "Other folds" ... the Gentiles would later be brought into the one flock.
(3) Unlike the West, which views the cross and salvation as transactional, based on the concept of propitiation, the East correctly stresses God accepting Christ's voluntary self-offering in love, after the model of expiation. Christ laid down His life for his friends, and took it up again in the Resurrection, giving us that resurrected life. Like Christ, we have the power to lay down our lives in martyrdom and voluntary self-sacrifice in love and to take up our resurrected life.
(4) Vs. 30: "I and My Father are one", is the key verse in the chapter. The mystery of the unity of the Trinity and the unity of the Body of Christ, the Church. Jesus and the Father are united in Essence, We are united with Jesus by Grace.
(5) We are predestined to life in Christ if we accept that grace to be united with Him. Indeed salvation IS to be united in Christ to the Father by the Holy Spirit. There is no double predestination (i.e., some being predestined to damnation) as the Calvinists assert. We are all predestined to Life, but have the freedom to accept or reject this by our own free will.
