The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 7, Romans chapters 7:1-8:17
November 2, 2021
Topics include:
(1) the relationship between Law and Sin: The Law makes us aware of the sin (passions) we already have;
(2) the Law cannot save us from our sin --- that takes dying to sin through Baptism, being made alive in Christ by the Spirit in Baptism, Chrismation and the Eucharist;
(3) The Natural Law given to all by the Spirit; The righteousness of unbelievers is evident ... we do not judge, God alone is judge;
(4) The Law is not at fault for our sins ... it is not the physician at fault but the patient ... sin is not dead without the Law but is hidden;
(5) Sin disintegrates our mind and flesh, our thoughts and our actions ... sin dominates through the passions ... breaking a civil law does not equal sin, rather sin is the inclination to non-being, to death and destruction;
(6) Jesus had our flesh and yet did not sin ... he showed us that flesh does not have to sin;
(7) The Spirit transforms us and allows us to live according to the Kingdom --- all who are led by the Spirit are sons of God. By the Spirit of adoption to sonship we abandon obedience from fear of punishment or from trying to earn salvation and do all for the love of God. The fear we retain is the fear of a son that he might offend the love of the Father;
(8) We should be led by the Spirit in the now ... not only rely on our Baptism in the past.
