Meditation on Scripture: Phil. 4: 5 "Gentleness"

"Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near” (Phil. 4: 5)

Meditation:
Very many people, even sincere Christians, do not believe that gentleness is a necessary virtue, considering it to be something only external. If the fruit is sweet, they say, who cares if the bark of the wood is course? Who cares about the harshness of words if we know that underneath there is a good heart, a pure conscience and honest motivation?

But St. Paul, who was impulsive and sometimes quick-tempered, in almost all his epistles stresses the importance of gentleness in emotions and actions. Let’s say that this is only an outward appearance. But this outward appearance affects others and calms them. That is why St. Paul wants our gentleness to be “evident to all”, that it be our distinctive characteristic, just as the Savior indicates that love should be the distinctive characteristic of His followers: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13: 35).

And let us remember that “The Lord is near”. And always being aware of His presence, filled with the spirit of His unfailing gentleness, let us be careful not to let an impatient word offend the gentle image of the Savior. Let our gentleness be not only external restraint, but the expression of an internal kindness inherent to every true Christian.

«Кротость ваша да будет известна всем человекам. Господь близко» (Флп. 4:5)

Очень многие, даже искренние христиане, не считают кротость необходимой добродетелью, находя, что это только дело внешности. Если плод сладок, говорят они, кому какое дело, что древесная кора бывает груба? Какое значение имеет резкость в обращении, когда мы знаем, что под нею кроется доброе сердце, чистая совесть и честные побуждения?

Однако ап. Павел, сам человек порывистый и подчас – вспыльчивый, почти в каждом своем послании напирает на необходимости проявлять кротость в чувствах и в действиях. Это внешность, положим. Но внешностью этой мы влияем на других, умиротворяя их. Потому ап. Павел хочет, чтобы кротость наша была «всем известна», чтобы она составляла отличительную нашу черту точно так же, как и Спаситель указывает на любовь, отличающую Его последователей: «Потому узнают все, что вы Мои ученики, если будете иметь любовь между собою» (Ин. 13:35).

Вспомним же и мы, что «Господь близко». И, постоянно сознавая Его присутствие, проникаясь Его духом неизменной кротости, будем остерегаться единым нетерпеливым словом оскорбить кроткий образ Спасителя. Пусть кротость наша не будет одной только внешней сдержанностью, но выражением внутреннего благодушия, причастного каждому истинному христианину.
