The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 15, II Corinthians 5
September 06, 2022
Topics include:
(1) our the resurrection *body*;
(2) the sanctity of the body and on self-inflicted tortures;
(3) Paul's calm attitude to death;
(4) on living faithfully: sobriety in view of the judgment and loving remembrance of Christ's life, death, and resurrection for us;
(5) on Priesthood, exemplified by our Great High Priest: taking our sins, expiating them through the sacrifice (of His own body), reconciling us to God, and returning the sacrifice (the Sanctified Gifts) for our forgiveness and nourishment;
(6) on defilement: through Christ we are made holy, without defilement, so that we even kiss the departed, rather than fearing the defilement of a dead body;
(7) the body vs. the flesh: the body can act in a fleshly or a spiritual manner; and
(8) on sin, righteousness, and the nature of atonement: Luther said, "God damned His Son to Hell because of our sin." This is essentially blasphemous in Orthodoxy. Rather, our sins died with Christ, and that is the end of it!
