The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 16, II Corinthians 6-8
September 13, 2022
Topics include:
(1) further comments on the Priesthood from last week;
(2) Quotes and comments from the Fathers: "The heart of one who loves is wide open"; correcting a son by appealing to his Christian self-respect rather than by direct rebuke: "you are better than this ... walk the nobler path of a Son of God";
(3) On being the Temple of God ... the dwelling place of His glory; on not marrying a non-Christian, and on coming out from among heretics;
(4) Paul's great love for the Corinthians and his tactful and gentle further correction in the face of their earnest repentance;
(5) On Godly grief, leading to repentance and salvation vs. worldly grief, leading to regret and the desire for revenge. Only sorrow for sin is profitable. Despair / Nihilism is not Godly sorrow ... it does not have God at its center; (6) On giving to a cause that needs supporting: an act of grace that enriches both giver and receiver, honorable in the sight of God and man. We give for God's glory and it shows our goodwill.
