Meditation on Scripture: John 11:4 "The Reason For Trials"

“This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory, so that God’s Son may be glorified through it” (John 11:4 )

Meditation:
We encounter sickness, sorrow and grief at every turn. Not a single human life can avoid this. And although grief is essentially such an ordinary thing, at the same time it is also very mysterious. And amidst the grief most often and most naturally the question arises: why? We will probably receive the full answer only beyond the grave; but in part it is also given to us here to understand the aim and purpose of the trials sent to us.

In order to understand this purpose, we must remember that our sorrow does not affect only us, but its influence extends much farther. In the story of the sickness, death and resurrection of Lazarus we see the confirmation of the above. This event and miracle performed by the Savior in Bethany had four different effects and meanings. It was necessary for the Savior Himself: “so that God’s Son may be glorified through it”. It was necessary for the apostles: “and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe’’ (John 11: 15).

The Savior knew what a strong impression this miracle would make on the apostles, and said: “I am glad”. And of course the ones this event affected the most were Lazarus’s sisters, and when their beloved brother, whom they had grieved as dead, was returned to them, they also became convinced of the divinity of Jesus Christ. They understood for the first time what He could be for those who truly believed in Him. And finally, this grief and this miracle was necessary for the Jews themselves. Let us recall the words of the Savior: “Father, I thank You that you have heard me. I knew that You always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that You sent me.” (John 11: 41-42).

The great grief which had befallen Lazarus’s sisters was also to have a benevolent effect on the people who had gathered for this occasion in Bethany.

The purpose of the trial is revealed to us here with a completely new meaning, it is illuminated by a new light in which we perhaps are not used to seeing grief. But in our time all trials and sorrows have the same purpose as well – salvation of the human soul. For the Lord every trial is only a way of revealing to people the omnipotence of His saving grace. Be of good heart, brothers! Be courageous, be strengthened through hope, learn to rejoice also in sufferings (Rom: 5,3), since “endurance must have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (James 1:4)

«Сия болезнь не к смерти, но к славе Божией, да прославится через нее Сын Божий» (Ин. 11:4)

Болезнь, скорбь, горе встречаются на каждом шагу. Нет ни одной жизни человеческой, которая могла бы этого избегнуть. Но, хотя горе, в сущности, вещь такая обыкновенная, оно, в то же время, и весьма загадочно. И среди горя всего чаще, всего естественнее является вопрос: зачем? Полный ответ мы получим, вероятно, лишь за гробом; но отчасти нам дано и здесь познать цель и назначение ниспосланных нам испытаний.

Для того, чтобы понять эту цель, мы должны помнить, что наша скорбь не касается только нас лично, но действие ее простирается еще гораздо дальше. В истории болезни, смерти и воскрешения Лазаря мы видим подтверждение вышесказанного. Это событие и чудо, совершенное Спасителем в Вифании, имело четыре различных действия и значения. Оно было нужно для Самого Спасителя: «да прославится через нее Сын Божий». Оно было нужно для апостолов: «и радуюсь за вас, что Меня не было там, дабы вы уверовали» (ст. 15).

Спаситель знал, какое сильное впечатление это чудо произведет на апостолов, и сказал: "Я радуюсь". Всего ближе это событие касалось, конечно, сестер Лазаря, и когда им был возвращен любимый брат, оплакиваемый ими, как умерший, они вместе с тем получили и уверенность в Божестве Иисуса Христа. Они познали впервые, чем Он может быть для всех истинно верующих в Него. Наконец, эта же скорбь, это чудо было нужно и для самих иудеев. Вспомним слова Спасителя: «Отче, благодарю Тебя, что Ты услышал Меня! Я и знал, что Ты всегда услышишь Меня; но сказал сие для народа, здесь стоящего, чтобы поверили, что Ты послал Меня» (Ин. 11:41–42).

Великая скорбь, обрушившаяся на сестер Лазаря, должна была, таким образом, коснуться благотворно и народа, собранного по этому случаю в Вифании.

Назначение ниспосланного испытания является нам здесь в совершенно новом смысле, оно озарено новым светом, в который мы, быть может, не привыкли облекать скорбь. Однако же и в наши дни все испытания и скорби имеют ту же определенную цель – спасение души человеческой. Каждое испытание есть для Господа лишь способ явить пред людьми всемогущество спасительной Своей благодати. Ободритесь же, братия! Мужайтесь, укрепляйтесь надеждою, учитесь хвалиться и скорбями (Рим. 5:3), ибо «терпение должно иметь совершенное действие, чтобы вы были совершенны во всей полноте, без всякого недостатка» (Иак. 1:4).
