The Book of Enoch, Part 11
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
May 20, 2025
Description:
Metropolitan Jonah rounds out his series on the Book of Enoch with a quick look at a related text, The Book of Giants. It shares some of the same material with the Book of Enoch, but must be read with some care, due to apparent Gnostic / Dualist influences. Also discussed was summary material from the wikipedia page on the Book of Enoch.
Specific topics discussed include:
(1) First and Second Temple, the Deuteronomic reforms and Rabininic Judaism, and Hebrews vs. Jews. Jesus' teachings were more consistent with the Book of Enoch than Rabbinical Judaism, which was created during the Babylonian exile. The Mosaic covenant is about how to live in this world, not about salvation. "Judeo-christian" is not an acceptable term. Discussions of the possible reasons for the rejection of Enoch by Rabbinical Judaism.
(2) The Sadducees teaching, over and against Christ's teaching. The Saducees did not believe in the afterlife and sought only earthly rewards. They also rejected Kingship and a multi-personal God.
(3) The canonical context in the first century. There was no formal canon until 396, only books approved by various synods of Bishops. The Liturgy and the formation of the Church preceded the "canon". The Book of Enoch was familiar to and quoted by the Apostles.
