The Book of Revelation, Part 20: Chapters 20-22
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
January 14, 2025
Metropolitan Jonah wraps up his series on the Book of Revelation by discussing chapters 20-22.
Topics include:
(1) The millennial period of the Church from the resurrection of Christ until His second coming. But Christ's kingdom continues on past this period, of course;
(2) The first resurrection on the one hand describes the Martyrs and Saints who reign with God during this period, and, on the other hand, our baptism.
(3) The great judgement is according to works;
(4) This is the end of an epoch ... heaven and earth will melt away and a new heaven and a new earth will be made ... a recreation. The New Jerusalem which comes down from Heaven to earth is the archetype of the Temple, the dwelling place of God with His people. It is an immaculate city free of all defilement. God is the heart and core of His new creation and establishes an unconditional covenant with those who are saved;
(5) During this Church age we of course fight with Satan, but at the end of this period is a special period of tribulation where Satan is utterly attacking the people of God. The people of Satan will no longer conceal their hatred of the people of God;
(6) Christianity is not dualistic. God created all things good. Evil comes from rebellion against God. Any veering away from God's good will is Sin. People who hate God and are in rebellion against Him do bitter evil for a season. The Old Testament is not a full revelation of God. Jesus Christ himself is the full revelation of God. Because God loves His creation, He must sometimes stamp out evil. People interpreted this as His wrath. But God loves all men and wills that all be saved. He will always forgive the repentant sinner. Because those who are not saved reject and hate God, His love for them is ultimately experienced by them as a caustic burning fire, which they interpret as His wrath.
