Meditation on Scripture: Philippians 1: 3 "Looking For Novelty"

“For me it is no trouble to write the same things to you again, but for you it is a firm foundation.” (Philippians 1: 3)

Meditation:
St. Paul does not mind repeating the same instructions since he is convinced that this repetition is useful for those to whom they are addressed. People seek and love everything new. In vain do old people suggest to the young those books which nourished them in their youth. The young are not satisfied with them and for that reason that education presents so many difficulties. A child gets tired of listening to the same things; not having understood the basics, he hurries to comprehend those spheres of knowledge which are not yet accessible to him.

In the spiritual world we meet the same thing, and we often hear complaints that in sermons the same things are repeated. But would we really want those who preach, for the sake of novelty, to omit the only thing needful, the only thing which is changeless and eternal?

The truth is one, as God is One and Redemption is one. For that reason it cannot be burdensome for a Christian to read and re-read the Word of God. Upon constant reading of the Holy Scriptures he will be amazed to see with greater clarity what initially went unnoticed by him. Isn’t our reluctance to re-read the same things an indication of our indifference and superficial attitude to that truth which speaks to us about our salvation and promises eternal bliss? The desire for novelty usually leads to wandering along our own paths.

A person is cut off from the ancient root and is thrown in all directions. Very soon he loses his way and, not finding firm ground, either becomes more and more frivolous and empty, or becomes disillusioned with everything and becomes bitter. There is only one Divine path which has been laid out for man from the beginning of time, -- the path on which all of God’s blessings are concentrated, the path which follows Him and leads directly to Him. This path is old, and yet always “new and living” (Heb. 10: 20). The path is firm because its foundation from beginning to end is the Word of God. At the same time, it is a path where one encounters the most diverse experiences, wonderful discoveries, living springs and unfading light. One needs only to find the door where it comes from. Jesus said: “I am the door: whoever enters through Me will be saved” (John 10: 9).

«Писать вам о том же для меня не тягостно, а для вас твердо» (Флп. 3:1)

Апостол Павел не тяготится повторением одних и тех же наставлений, уверенный, что это повторение полезно для тех, к кому оно обращено. Люди ищут и любят все новое. Напрасно старики предлагают юношам те книги, которыми они питались в молодости. Молодежь ими не довольствуется, и потому то воспитание представляет столько затруднений. Ребенку надоедает твердить постоянно одно и то же; не усвоив азбуки, он спешит узнать те науки, которые ему еще недоступны.

В духовном мире мы встречаем то же самое, и не раз приходилось нам слышать жалобы на то, что в проповедях нам повторяют все одно и то же. Но неужели можно допустить, чтобы проповедники, ради новизны, упускали единое на потребу, единое неизменное и вечное?

Истина едина, как Един Бог и одно Искупление. Вот почему для христианина не может быть тягостно читать и перечитывать Слово Божие. При постоянном чтении Священного Писания его будет поражать с большей ясностью то, что сначала прошло для него незамеченным. Наша неохота перечитывать одно и то же не есть ли признак нашего равнодушия и поверхностного отношения к той истине, которая возвещает нам о нашем спасении и обещает вечное блаженство? За желанием новизны обыкновенно следует блуждание по собственным путям.

Человек отрывается от векового корня, и его бросает во все стороны. Он очень скоро сбивается с дороги и, не находя почвы, или предается все большему легкомыслию и пустоте, или разочаровывается во всем и предается горечи. Один путь Божий проложен был для человека от начала времен, тот путь, на котором сосредоточены все Его благословения, который протекает с Ним и ведет прямо к Нему. Это путь старый, а вместе с тем всегда новый и живой (Евр. 10:19). Это путь твердый, потому что основание его, от начала до конца, есть Слово Божие; вместе с тем это путь, на котором встречаются самые разнообразные опыты, чудные открытия, живые источники, неугасающий свет. Найти его легко, надо только попасть в ту дверь, от которой он исходит. Иисус сказал: «Я есмь дверь: кто войдет Мною, тот спасется» (Ин. 10:9).
