Meditation on Scripture: Deuteronomy 2:7 "God is Near"

“The Lord your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast desert.” (Deut. 2:7) 

Meditation:
Can it be that the care of Providence touches every individual person? Can it be that the Lord knows about my terrible despondency, about my lonely path through the joyless desert? But I thought that I was abandoned by everyone, that I had lost my God. I called to Him night and day and thought that He did not hear me. But at that very time He knew everything: my loneliness and the great, barren desert through which I was passing.

Why did I doubt? The Lord was always near. On this seemingly barren soil, without my knowledge, in the still silence, He sowed the seeds which were to come up in the promised land. So when I was walking through the desert He was with me. He Himself led me to the quiet waters and verdant pastures, “The Lord was in this place, and I didn't even know it” (Gen. 28: 16).

Having felt this closeness of the Lord, I will thank Him most of all for the lonely hours of spiritual despondency and inner struggle when He was invisibly with me and when at last I felt God’s presence and experienced His love.

When this feeling of the closeness of the Lord comes the desert ceases to be a desert. It becomes “a well-watered garden, a spring whose waters never dry up” (Is. 58: 11). And you can see the path, already laid, bright and holy, on which even the inexperienced will not get lost, because the Lord Himself, Who is aware of all the wanderings of His earthly pilgrims, keeps vigil over it.

«Ибо Господь, Бог твой, благословил тебя во всяком деле рук твоих, покровительствовал тебе во время путешествия твоего по великой пустыне сей» (Втор. 2:7)

Неужели забота Провидения простирается на каждого отдельного человека? Неужели Господь знает о моем ужасном унынии, о моем одиноком пути по безотрадной пустыне? А мне казалось, что я всеми покинут, я потерял Бога моего. Я звал Его днем и ночью и думал, что Он меня не слышит. Однако, в то самое время все было известно Ему: и мое одиночество, и громадная, бесплодная пустыня, по которой я проходил.

Почему же я сомневался? Господь был все время ко мне близок. На этой самой казавшейся бесплодной почве, без моего ведома, в безмолвной тишине Он посеял те семена, которые должны были взойти в земле обетованной. Итак, когда я проходил по пустыне, Он был со мною, Он сам вел меня к тихим водам и злачным пажитям, «Господь был в месте том, и я того не знал» (Быт. 28:16).

Постигнув эту близость Господа, я возблагодарю Его больше всего за те одинокие часы душевной тоски и внутренней борьбы, когда Он невидимо был со мною, и, наконец, я познал Бога и испытал на себе Его любовь.

Когда наступает осуществление этой близости Господней, тогда пустыня перестает быть пустыней, она превращается в «напоенный водою сад, в источник, которого воды никогда не иссякают» (Ис. 58:11). И виднеется путь, уже проложенный, светлый и святой, на котором даже и неопытный не заблудится, потому что над ним бодрствует Сам Господь, у Которого исчислены все скитания Его земных странников.
