The Pastoral Epistles of Saint Paul
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen), part 1
Class #1:
Galatians 1:1-2:14.
This class covers some of the background from the Acts of the Apostles, including the Jerusalem Apostolic Council and St. Paul's first two missionary journeys, and a lay of the land of Asia Minor. The backdrop is Paul's difficulties with the Judaizers, the "Party of Circumcision", who wanted to require Gentiles to first convert to Judaism before becoming Christian. Then the class begins St. Paul's Epistle to the Galatians, discussing its Trinitarian emphasis, Paul's defence of his Apostleship, and his confrontation of St. Peter over the issue of the Judaizers and the proper reception of Gentile believers by Jewish Christians. Topics discussed also include the Essenes, the origins of the peoples of Galatia, St. Paul's history and his interaction with the "pillars of the Church", James, Peter and John, and some issues surrounding modern scholarship.
