Meditation on Scripture: 1Thess. 5:16-17 "Rejoicing And Prayer"

“Always rejoice, pray without ceasing” (1Thess. 5:16-17)

Meditation:
Joy and prayer cannot be opposites, although it might seem that a soul which is filled with happiness and rejoicing has nothing more to ask of the Lord. But can prayer be only an expression of sorrow and sickness, only a cry of a suffering soul? And in the greatest and most complete joy there can be found no need to turn to God and pray for His blessing and thank Him for the great gift of joy which fills our heart? In joy, as in grief, the soul must first of all seek the Lord, the Source of our life. To Him, to His feet, we must bring happiness, grief, tears and rejoicing.

Every good and perfect gift is from above (Jam. 1:17). Joy and grief are all from Him. And in prayer there is constant communion with Him. Everything bright and joyful in our life is a gift of God: youth, health, the sacred happiness of family, the beauty of nature, every ray of sunlight, every wonderful flower of the field – everything that makes us happy and is dear to us – all this we receive from the hands of the Creator.

But our main joy, spiritual joy, joy in Christ, is the fullness of love. Only in love is there true happiness, only a loving soul shines brightly like the sun, reflecting a heavenly radiance. Love requires prayer, and those who are happy in love pray without ceasing, since true love itself is prayer.

In love there is joy, but this joy is imperfect until we lay down our life for our friends. “There is no greater love than when one lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Loving each other, giving one’ life to serve others and becoming able to forget oneself for others, we realize that true life consists in love. Then it becomes clear to us that we endured spiritual hunger and were eating leftovers while we lived only for ourselves. The deeper our love, the stronger is our desire to improve ourselves. The more fervently we love and strive for the ideal, the less we are satisfied with ourselves. The happiness of others, their peace, their health and their joy is our life’s goal. We call to the Lord about them day and night and we ask first of all for God’s blessing on them.

Lord! Forever unite joy with prayer and thanksgiving in me. Let my love for You and my neighbor pray within me, and may I never forget the words You uttered before Your death: “I thirst” (John 19:28).

These words expressed all Your love, thirsting for the salvation of mankind. Let me also, Lord, thirst not only for the salvation of my soul, but also for the salvation of everyone. Let me rejoice not only with an earthly, transitory joy, but let me enter into the joy of my Lord (Matt. 25:21)! Give me the power of Your love and Your prayer, and when I reach Your glory, You will let me taste that eternal joy which is in Your right hand forever.

«Всегда радуйтесь, непрестанно молитесь» (1Фес. 5:16–17)

Радость и молитва не могут противоречить друг другу, хотя бы казалось, что душе, исполненной радости и ликования, не о чем более просить Господа. Но неужеле же молитва есть не только выражение скорби и болезни, один вопль страдающей души? И неужели в радости самой светлой, самой полной не найдется потребности обратиться к Господу, молясь о Его бдагословении и вознося Ему благодарение за великий дар радости, наполняющий наше сердце? В радости, как и в скорби, душа должна прежде всего искать Господа, Источника жизни нашей. К Нему, к Его ногам мы должны нести и счастье, и горе, и слезы, и ликование.

Всякий дар совершенный исходит свыше (Иак. 1:17). Радость и скорбь – все от Него. И в молитве постоянное общение с Ним. Все светлое, отрадное в жизни нашей есть дар Божий: молодость, здоровье, святое семейное счастье, красота природы, каждый солнечный луч, каждый чудный цветок на поле – все, что нас радует, все нам дорогое, все это мы принимаем из рук Творца.

Но главная радость наша, радость духовная, радость во Христе – есть полнота любви. Только в любви – истинное счастье, только любящая душа светится ярким солнечным светом, отражая в себе небесное сияние. Любовь нуждается в молитве, и радующийся в любви постоянно молится, так как истинная любовь сама по себе есть молитва.

В любви получается радость, но радость эта несовершенна, пока мы душу свою не положили за друзей своих. «Нет больше той любви, как если кто положит душу свою за друзей своих» (Ин. 15:13). Любя друг друга, отдавая душу свою на служение ближним, становясь способным забыть себя для других, мы сознаем, что истинная жизнь в любви. Тогда нам становится ясно, что мы терпели голод духовный и питались рожками, пока мы жили только для себя. Чем глубже наша любовь, тем сильнее наше желание совершенствоваться. Чем горячее мы любим, тем пламеннее стремимся к идеалу, тем менее мы довольны собой. Счастье ближнего, его покой, его здоровье, его радости составляют цель нашей жизни. О них мы взываем день и ночь ко Господу, на них мы призываем прежде всего благословение Божие.

О, Боже! Соедини же во мне навсегда радость с молитвой и благодарением. Пусть молится во мне любовь моя к Тебе и к ближним моим, пусть, помня Твои предсмертные слова, я не забуду никогда слово, Тобой изреченное: «Жажду!» (Ин. 19:28).

В этом слове сказалась вся любовь Твоя, жаждущая спасения человечества. Дай же и мне, Господи, жаждать не только спасения моей души, но и спасения всех людей. Дай мне радоваться не одной земной, преходящей радостью, но дай мне войти в радость Господа моего (Мф. 25:21)! Дай мне силу Твоей любви, Твоей молитвы, и когда я достигну славы Твоей, то Ты дашь мне вкусить ту радость вечную, которая в деснице Твоей во век.
