“The star went before them” (Matt. 2:9)

Meditation:
So, where was the star while they were in Herod’s city? Did it stop shining in the sky and was extinguished the moment that it brought them to the palace of the great king?

No, the star remained where it was, but they could not see it. It was concealed by human glory and the tall buildings of the large city. The Magi could no longer see the wondrous heavenly sign which had led them when it was darkened by earthly, worldly shadows. Once they again left behind everything earthly, the star again appeared to them. It was waiting for them in the pure vault of heaven, and when their eyes turned from the sinful world, once again the quiet radiance from above descended on them.

The same also happens sometimes with you, my soul. You cry out in despair about the disappearance of the star of Bethlehem, whereas you yourself have turned away from it. The star is still where it was, but you have lost sight of the sky. All the vain, worldly and earthly things have clouded your gaze and darkened the glory of former days.

So, rise higher, and the star will once again shine for you in all its glory. The wonderful light in the east will again return to you, and you will once again perceive the glory which appeared to you during the days of your youth. Your star is waiting for you to bring you to the manger of the Divine Infant, and when you achieve the humble submission demonstrated in Bethlehem, you yourself will become an infant and will have the heart of a child and the wisdom of maturity.

«Звезда шла перед ними» (Мф. 2:9)

Где же была звезда, пока они оставались во граде Ирода? Неужели она перестала сиять на небе и погасла в ту минуту, как довела их до дворца великого царя?

Нет, звезда оставалась там же, но они потеряли ее из виду. Она была заслонена славою человеческою, высокими зданиями обширного города. Волхвы перестали видеть чудное небесное знамение, которое вело их, когда оно омрачилось мирскою, житейскою тенью. Когда же они вновь оставили за собою все земное, звезда снова явилась им. Она их ждала на чистом небесном своде, и когда их глаза отвернулись от греховного мира, их снова озарило свыше тихое сияние.

Так же бывает, подчас, и с тобою, душа моя. Раздаются твои отчаянные вопли об исчезновении Вифлеемской звезды, тогда как ты сама от нее отвернулась. Звезда осталась на своем месте, но ты потеряла небо из виду. Все суетное, все мирское, земное отуманило твой взор и омрачило славу прежних дней.

Поднимись же выше, и звезда снова воссияет для тебя во всем своем блеске. Чудный свет на востоке будет тебе возвращен, и ты снова познаешь славу, явившуюся тебе в дни твоей юности. Твоя звезда тебя ждет, чтобы вести к яслям Божественного Младенца, и когда ты достигнешь смирения, проявленного в Вифлееме, ты обратишься сама в младенца и будешь иметь сердце ребенка и мудрость зрелости.
