The Book of Enoch, Part 10
Epistle of Enoch (Book 5), Chapters 4-6
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
May 13, 2025
Description:
Metropolitan Jonah discusses the 'Epistle of Enoch" within the Book of Enoch, specifically Chapters 4-6, which are a call to repentance. Topics discussed include:
(1) Fearing God ... or just fearing loss of life and possessions? THe whole creation fears and trembles before God, except for sinful man;
(2) The day of judgement shall reveal the truth and the righteous shall be vindicated, who in this life were subject to mocking and persecution by the unrighteous. The righteous, like Job, persist in *blessing* God, despite these attacks from the wicked. This is our calling in a nutshell. This same theme is present in the canonical scriptures (OT, NT) ---Enoch shares a common vision of faith with them. The righteous can rejoice, amidst their persecutions, knowing that God will vindicate and reward them and that they will not need to hide on the Great Day of Judgement, as will everyone else;
(3) These words are used to describe the unrighteous: violence, lying, perversion of God's words, idolatry and blasphemy;
(4) Discussion of context in terms of the first and second temples, the Deuteronomic "reforms", the Sadducees, and the Essenes.
