The Gospel of John, Part 20
Chapter 16
Talk by Metropolitan Jonah (Paffhausen)
November 18, 2025
Description:
Metropolitan Jonah discusses the Gospel of John chapter 16. Topics discussed include:
(1) The Holy Spirit makes Christ present for believers;
(2) The Holy Spirit convicts the world of its unbelief, which is sin. Because they do not believe, they do not seek God's mercy. True belief leads to love of Christ and putting one's hope in Him. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of righteousness, because its own righteousness is fallen, as demonstrated by the irreproachable righteousness of Jesus Christ, validated in His resurrection and going to the Father. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of judgment, because in unbelief it remains with the ruler of this world, Satan, and is judged with him;
(3) Justice in the West is forensic and leads to condemnation, whereas the Church teaches a justice that is righteousness and leads to moral conviction of the conscience and repentance among those who believe;
(4) The Holy Spirit continued God's self-revelation after Christ's ascension. It helped the Church through various heresies, e.g., Arianism. The Holy Spirit leads us into spiritual maturity in Christ;
(5) Eternal joy is to commune with God for His own sake;
(6) We are united with Christ by the Holy Spirit. The Father is now with us as He is with Christ;
(7) Christ has overcome the world and fills it with himself. His Kingdom shall have no end. All that is of this world shall pass away, but all that is recapitulated in Him will last forever.
